What is SEO?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing list results whether it is videos, blogs or other websites based on a search in the order that the search engine deems "relevant" to the search by the user.

When a search engine lists its results these are some of the things that matter:

• Words
• Page Titles
• Links
• Words in links
• Reputation

Words that matter:

When I am talking about words that matter I am talking about the words you are using on your website or your blog to describe your business, subject in your blog or services you might offer. The words you use need to be informative, relevant to the subject you are talking about and uses words that people might search for when trying to find your website.

Titles matter:

Using titles on your webpages matter to a search engine because a page title usually describes what the website might be about and is a snapshot of the content, often you may not notice the page title as it is part of the code. So always make sure you have a descriptive page title aimed at that particular pages content. Have a different one for each page on your website.

Links matter:

Links between websites matter, usually when one website links to another it is a recomendation which ads to the credibility of your website and content. The more "credible" websites you get to link to your website will help you with your page ranking within the search engines.

Words in links matter:

When creating links to pages on your own site or other websites you should always use descriptive words for the link. For example instead of "click here" write a descriptive link to one of your website pages such as, visit our services page for information on what we do.

Reputation matters:

Sites that continually have good fresh content and have lots of links to their content from other sites/readers that are interested in the articles you write will climb the "ladder" in the search engine results.
